Short about SIRENA, as written in the booklet to their newest BIS-cd: Now and Then, released in 2014.
On ‘Now and Then’ the Sirena Recorder Quartet presents a selection of works that for long time have featured in the ensemble’s repertoire. During the past decade, Sirena has focused on developing its live performances and this has resulted in a completely new form of concert in which the ensemble makes use of choreography and of the specific possibilities of each concert venue in order to intensify the experience of its audiences. Performing for children has also been a priority for the quartet, and over the years Sirena has given several hundreds of concerts aimed at schoolchildren and families throughout Scandinavia. Videos of its live performances can be seen here on this website, and on YouTube.
Hailing from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and later, the works on ‘Now and Then’ illustrate the great diversity of recorder music, as well as the versatility of this Danish-Swedish ensemble, which regularly performs music from seven centuries. Consisting of Karina Agerbo, Marit Ernst Bock, Pia Brinch Jensen and Pia Loman, Sirena was formed in 1993 and has since won several awards and critical acclaim for its interpretations of early as well as contemporary repertoire. Throughout its existence, the ensemble has performed extensively throughout Scandinavia, Germany and the UK, and has premièred numerous works by Scandinavian composers. The ensemble’s previous disc for BIS Records was Baroque (BIS-1234) with works by Telemann, Boismortier and Schickhardt. It was preceded by an anthology of contemporary works for recorder quartet, Sitting Ducks (BIS-1112), which earned top marks on the respected web site klassik-heute.de (‘When words fail, there’s only one solid piece of advice: Listen to it!’).
